The Department of Dermatology was organized to serve the dermatological needs of Makati Medical Center, its charity program and the Center’s Internship Training Program.
Dr. Manuel C. Fernandez Sr. and Dr. Thelma de Villa-Leelin founded it. Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell and Dr. Filomena Legarda-Montinola later joined them as senior consultants. Dr. Manuel O. Fernandez Jr. later joined the consultant staff, after training in Dermatologic-Plastic Surgery in the United States.
The dermatology department initiated in 1988 its own 3-year residency program, which was promptly accredited by the Philippine Board of Dermatology. To maintain a high quality of training, it limits the number of residents it accepts in to the program.

The department continually updates itself by active participation of its staff members and resident in Postgraduate courses, local and international conventions, Continuing Medical Education courses, and annual training workshops. Its library is equipped with up-to-date books, publication and online journals. Research is a major part of its training program producing excellent award-winning research papers. This is complemented by the acquisition of state-of-the-art technical equipment including a light microscope, 5-header microscope, Fluorescent microscope, VISIA Skin Analysis, Mexameter, and Sebumenter. On July 2002, the MCF Phototherapy and Laser Center was opened to honor Dr. Manuel C. Fernandez, Sr. the center, now renamed MCF Dermlaser and phototherapy Center boasts of 12 laser and light machines, 2 phototherapy units, 1 Hand and Foot UVA Phototherapy, and 1 hand-held UVB phototherapy.

To continually sustain excellence by continuing medical education through lectures, workshops, seminars, research, attendance in conferences and fellowships To continually uphold the requirements set by the Philippine Dermatological Society for accreditation in the training program and in the good standing of its members
