PDS 15 th Annual Residents Research Forum
And Annual Scientific Poster Contest

The 15 th Annual Resident's Research Forum, which is held yearly to promote the dissemination of original quality research among PDS members and residents, was held at the Northeast Greenhills Clubhouse. Schering Plough agreed to sponsor the event (venue and food). PDS sponsored the cash prize of P45,000 for the top three winners and institutions.
Nine excellent research papers were submitted from the PDS Dermatology residency training institutions. The distinguished board of judges was comprised of the following: Dr. Shelly Dela Vega who is the head of the section of Geriatic Medicine, Medical City and St. Lukes Medical Center, Dr. Marissa Alejandria from the Clinical Epidemiology Unit, UP-Philippine General Hospital and Dr, Lyde Magpantay from the Epidemiology Unit at St. Luke's Medical Center . The 3 winning papers were ranked from third to first place, and authors received a Certificate of Recognition as “Most Outstanding Research Paper” and a Cash prize of Ten Thousand Pesos (P10,000). In addition, the training institutions of each winning entry will receive Five Thousand Pesos (P5,000). The 3 rd place winning paper was written by Dr. Marie Krsitine Dillague and Dr, Vermen Verallo-Rowell from the Skin and Cancer Foundation and entitled “The Comparative Antibacterial Effects of Coconut Oil and Olive Oil in Atopic Dermatitis: A double blind, randomized controlled trial”. The 2 nd place winning paper was written by Dr. Melanie Pauline G. Chao-Lo, MD, Ms. Daisy G. Cauilan, Jocelyn Domingo, Carmelita Cardona, Zennie Aceron, and Dr, Arnelfa C. Paliza, MD from the University of Sto. Tomas, Dept. of Dermatology and entitled “A double blind randomized controlled trial on the safety and effectiveness of 10% Ipomoea Muricata (Tonkin) ointment vs Mupirocin ointment in the treatment of localized primary bacterial skin infections”. And in FIRST PLACE , the winning paper was written by Dr. Michelle Barcelona Manuel. Dr. Ivan Singzon, Dr. Maricarr Lacuesta, Dr. Sharon Callejo, Dr. Teresita Gabriel, Dr. Grace Teodosio, Dr. Gertrude Chan from the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine and entitled “A Randomized, Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Comparative Study on the Safety and Efficacy of 0.75% Capsaicin (Capsicum Frutescens) Cream Agains 7% DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) Cream as a Mosquito Repellent”. All participants and winners are encouraged to submit their papers to the Journal of the PDS for publication and to disseminate the important research findings.
The Annual PDS Scientific Poster Contest was held on November 15 to 16 at the EDSA Shangrila Hotel during the Annual PDS Convention. Its objective is to disseminate original quality research and present interesting and rare cases among PDS members and resident trainees.
Stiefel agreed to sponsor the cash prizes for the opt three winners (P60,000). A special exhibit poster was presented by Dr. Sue May Tan of Changi Hospital.
Our panel of judges included Dr. Yong Kwang Tay, Senior Consultant Dermatologist heading the Division of Dermatology at Changi General Hospital in Singapore and one of our distinguished speakers; Dr. Lizamarie Paz-Tan, a PDS fellow practicing in several hospitals at Batac City , Laoag City and Vigan City in Ilocos Sur; and Dr. Patricia Valmonte-Alabanza, who is a PDS fellow in private practice in Malate, Manila.
A Certificate of Distinction and a cash prize of Ten Thousand pesos (P10,000) was awarded to each of the three most outstanding poster entries. All presenters however will receive certificates of participation and consolation cash prize.
The three most outstanding posters presented as judged by the panel were are following, in no particular order:
“Kimura's Disease in a Filipino Male” from the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital Section of Dermatology, presented by Dr. Leslie Colleen Tiongson-Lopez and Dr. Georgina Pastorfide.
“Epidermolytic Hyperkeratosis in a Filipino Child with Genetic Analysis” from Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center Dept. of Dermatology, presented by Dr. Ma. Luisa R. Ticzon, Dr. Lillian Villafuerte, Dr. Agnes Espinoza Thaebtharm and Dr. Venajmin Bince.
“A Rare Case of Hansen's Disease with Scrofuloderma in a Filipino Patient with Far Advanced Tuberculosis” from the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine Dept. of Dermatology, presented by Dr. Ma. Rosario Trinidad Villar Pineda and Dr. Ma. Teresita Gabriel.
