Last February 24, 2016, the University of Santo Tomas Hospital (USTH) Department of Dermatology together with the Philippine Dermatological Society’s (PDS) Leprosy Subspecialty Core Group hosted the monthly Continuing Medical Education (CME) entitled: The Golden Compass: Guide for the Ethical Dermatologist. The moderator for the said event was Dr. Maria Lourdes H. Palmero, Assistant Residency Training Officer of the Department of Dermatology at USTH.
The CME started with an enlightening talk, which was delivered by Dr. Belen L. Dofitas, President of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Leprosy Mission. She highlighted the need for the human aspect to breach the gap between technology and healthcare delivery to areas that need it. Thereafter, a video presentation entitled: Partners in Leprosy Action and Social Innovation in Health Initiatives was shown. It was followed by a lively discussion by Dr. Ma. Teresita Gabriel, head of the PDS Leprosy Core Group, on measures they have done to further enhance the lives of people afflicted with Hansen’s disease in our country.
The second part of the CME then started with a thought-provoking and interactive discussion by Dr. Patrick Moral, Chairman and Associate Professor of the Department of Ethics, UST-Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (UST-FMS), and member of the Bioethics Society of the Philippines. Dr. Moral emphasized on the importance of applying basic ethical principles in the practice of physicians and dermatologists alike.
In the latter part of the program, Dr. Lilia O. Santiago gave a thorough discussion on the PDS Code of Ethics, and gave her suggestions on current issues or ethical dilemmas that should be included in the PDS Code of Ethics. The entire event was a huge success, highlighted by a very interactive open forum.
