The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) Department of Dermatology, together with the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) Immunodermatology Subspecialty Core Group, hosted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) lecture entitled “The Body at War” last May 25, 2016. Held at the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club, the event was hosted by Dr. Emmerson Gale S. Vista, DPDS.
The CME opened with a quiz on the topic of Immunodermatology, followed by a welcome remark by Dr. Ma. Teresita G. Gabriel, FPDS, Chair of the RITM-Department of Dermatology. She mentioned that this title denotes a confused system, either by immune complexes, infections, or even autoantibodies. Added that despite the best treatment modalities, be it topical, systemic or biologic, we should bear in mind that the approach to a certain malady needs compassion and a lot of caring. This then makes the contemplative talk on Pranic Healing by guest speaker Dr. Otilia B. Garcia, MHA, doubly interesting. She related how this form of energy healing complements our practice as dermatologists, leaving us with an age-old precept of treating patients holistically.
Interesting cases on Inherited Epidermolysis Bullosa by Dr. Mohammad Yoga A. Waskito, Pemphigus Vulgaris by Dr. Carmelie Marisse A. Villespin, and Lupus Erythematosus by Dr. Catherine T. Go-Teodosio were reported. Drs. Clarisse G. Mendoza, FPDS, Melanie Joy C. Doria-Ruiz, DPDS, and Rogelio A. Balagat, FPDS gave their reactions after each presentation, respectively.
Additional topics were Biopsy Taking and Severity Scoring sheets in Autoimmune Blistering Diseases discussed by Dr. Johanna Pauline H. Lazo-Dizon, FPDS. Furthermore, Dr. Mae R. Quizon, FPDS introduced the DIF kits to the PDS community, highlighting how these can be obtained and used by fellow dermatologists. The event ended with the awarding of certificates led by Dr. Gabriel, and the closing remark given by PDS President Dr. Daisy King Ismael, FPDS. It was indeed an afternoon filled with insight and learning for all dermatologists.
May CME Pearls:
- Pranic healing ulitlizes prana or chi to balance the physical and etheric body.
- Understanding the pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases helps dermatologists in treating patients.
- The management of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita requires a multidisciplinary approach.
- DIF kits allow dermatologists to perform biopsy on patients without the need to send them to specialty centers.
