Medicolegal Pitfalls in Dermatology and How to Avoid the Legal “Blemish”

            The Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) Department of Dermatology, together with the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) Dermatological Surgery Subspecialty Core Group, hosted the monthly Continuing Medical Education (CME) entitled Lex et Dermatologia: Law and Dermatology Medicolegal Pitfalls in Dermatology and How to Avoid the Legal “Blemish” last July 27, 2016 at the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club, Mandaluyong City.

Dermatologists may encounter medicolegal issues, particularly with cosmetic procedures, hence this CME focused on cosmetic and procedural dermatology and the possible problems that may be encountered. Topics included facial anatomy for botulinum toxin and filler injection, prevention of complications of dermatological procedures, updates on medical jurisprudence and a panel discussion on issues which may arise in performing dermatological procedures.

Opening remarks were given by our department chairman, Dr. Ma. Flordeliz Abad-Casintahan, FPDS. Dr. Agnes Espinoza-Thaebtharm, FPDS moderated the first part of the program, which was started by Dr. Zharlah Gulmatico-Flores, FPDS who discussed on the mastery of facial anatomy for botulinum toxin and filler injection. This was followed by Dr. Jeanne Marie B. Reyes-Marquez, FPDS who discussed about prevention of dermatological procedure complications and Atty. Nelson U. Logronio, MD who talked about updates on medical jurisprudence. The second part of the program, moderated by Atty. Elizabeth Amelia V. Tianco, MD, FPDS, consisted of a panel discussion on three hypothetical medicolegal cases which was presented by a second year resident, Dr. Ron Michael Dagala. Dr. Arnold Yu, FPDS, Atty. Antonio Alejandro Rebosa, MD, Atty. Albert Dario Rebosa, MD and Atty. Nelson U. Logronio, MD, served as panelists, sharing their expertise on how to prevent and deal with the different medicolegal issues. Throughout the discussion, emphasis was given on physician’s competence and upholding the standard of care in managing patients and performing procedures, the use and limitations of waivers or informed consent and the importance of seeking legal counsel when medicolegal issues arise. The program ended with the closing remarks from Dr. Daisy King-Ismael, FPDS, PDS president and our department vice-chairman.
