February 2017 CME: Dermatoses in Pregnancy

The Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) in partnership with the Dermatopathology Subspecialty Core group and the Skin and Cancer Foundation, Inc. (SCFI) held its monthly Continuing Medical Education (CME) activity at the Pavillion B, Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club, Mandaluyong City, Philippines, entitled “Dermatoses in Pregnancy” last February 22, 2017. The event started with the Invocation, National anthem, PDA Hymn and PDS hymn led by Dr. Sylvia Jacinto, SCFI President and Chairman Emeritus and opening remarks by the SCFI Chairman, Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell.
First part of the program showcased three case presentations of pregnant patients with different skin diseases. First case presented by Dr. Patricia Pastrana, a 2nd year SCFI resident, discussed a case of a pregnant patient with Psoriasis who was treated with Ustekinumab and Diet modification throughout her pregnancy. It was followed by a short discussion on Immunobiologics and its safety during pregnancy. Dra. Vermen Verallo-Rowell was the reactor of the case, who further discussed the importance of the Anti-inflammatory diet in treating patients with Psoriasis.
The next cases presented were patients with autoimmune skin diseases in pregnancy. The second case, presented by Dr. Terese Monette Aquino, a 2nd year resident from SCFI, was a case of Epidermolysis Bullosa, while the third and last case, presented by Dr. Charlene Palafox, also a 2nd year SCFI resident, was a case of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Dr. Rogelio Balagat, a Rheumatologist and Dermatologist, served as the reactor of these cases. He stressed the importance of the need for multi-specialty support and planning in treating pregnant patients with autoimmune diseases.
The program was then followed by a lecture by Dr. Noemi Salta-Ramos, entitled, “Dermatologic Therapeutics in Pregnancy”. This high yield lecture was also presented during the 2016 Philippine Dermatologic Society Convention held last November 2016 in Edsa Shangrila Hotel. She discussed the key safety points and recommended therapeutics of the common skin disorders that afflict pregnant women. The last lecture tackling the new Senate Bill RA 10912 and PRC CPD-IRR Guidelines was lectured by no other than our very own,Dr. Clarita Maaño, the newly appointed Chair of the CPD Council for Medicine and PRC Board of Medicine. The Continuing Professional Guidelines (CPD) was discussed in detail and its significance in monitoring and evaluating professionals to continuously improve the competence of professionals in accordance to international standards. These lectures where then followed by an open forum. To conclude the program, the awarding of certificates and closing remarks was led by the current PDS chair, Dr. Ma. Angela Lavadia.
This February CME was a success for there was a record breaking attendance of 160 consultants and additional 92 attendees from the live online streaming webcast made possible by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Moreover, this CME would like to dedicate its success to the relevant cases presented and the efforts and knowledge imparted by the prestigious speakers on treating, “Dermatoses in Pregnancy”
