Every year, each of the 11 Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) accredited institutions send their brightest representatives to the podiums of the highly–anticipated PDS Quiz Bee Cup. Ably supported by an educational grant from Glenmark Philippines, the competition aims to test the residents’ best knowledge of not only clinicopathologic Dermatology, but of Medicine & Health, General Information, Current events and PDS History. As the event reopened from a long hiatus since 2013, the Quiz Bee Cup trophy has been rolling from one institution to another. With each team eyeing to house it at their respective institutions for a year of pride and glory.
Held at the Wack-wack Golf & Country Club last August 30th, the event was formally started by the opening remarks of the PDS President Dr. Angela Lavadia and the introduction of Dr. Adrian Laurel, as the debonair emcee once again, of the participating institutions comprising of a team each of 1 Second year, 1 First year and 1 Reserve (First or Second year) contestant. And of course of the judges, all non-institution based, headed this time by Dr. Noemie Salta-Ramos, together with Drs. Maria Juliet Macarayo, Cecille Rosete and Christene Pearl Arandia. Like last year’s successful competition, they had each round carefully prepared and with questions backed up only with reliable sources; ensuring all that was necessary to make this 5th cup a legitimate battle of the brains while still maintaining the ultimate goal of promoting camaraderie among the PDS institutions.
With each team nervously clutching on their set of ABCD placards, the first round commenced smoothly with EASY 10 questions of 10 points each. At the end of the round, each institution cheered their teams on as at this point, anyone still had a chance to win. But cheers got louder as an announcement of a new and exciting segment was done, the first-ever “Battle of the Masters”- to be participated in by each institution’s respective Chairman or consultant representative. With only the leading contestants who answered most of the fun trivia on Philippine showbiz to move on to the second round.
For the second round of the Quiz Bee Cup, the teams were again called onstage to compete for LESS EASY 5 questions of 20 points each. Then as a breather after that very competitive round, the second round of the Battle of the Masters was resumed with consultants Drs. Winlove Mojica of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH), and Lian Jamisola of the University of the East (UE) besting all others as the first winners of the Battle of the Masters!
The tension was impalpable as the program shifted gear to the Quiz Bee 3rd round, with all participating teams slugging it out to be included in the Top 3 teams to vie for the trophy. A grueling 5 HARD questions of 30 points each were asked, and at the end ensured spots for the grand round to the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center (OMMC) & Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) teams. But, the third spot was decided by a tie-breaker round between Makati Medical Center (MMC) & UP-PGH, with the latter securing the third slot. Realizing that the Top 3 teams’ each institution having won a past Quiz Bee Cup respectively OMMC (2015), RITM (2016) and UP-PGH (2013), all the more made the eye on the prize much sweeter.
As deliberation for final winners were made, lively song numbers from Dr. Angel Guzman of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Dr. Mary Renebe Tugon from East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) were rendered to keep the crowd entertained.
Finally, and with the only team to answer correctly all 5 questions of increasing difficulty of the FINAL round, the RITM team represented by Drs. Eunice Kaye M. Rayos-Lopez (2nd year) and Julius G. Gatmaitan (1st Year) was declared as this year’s champions to take home the Quiz Bee trophy!
Efforts were not missed for teams OMMC of Drs. Matthew David S. Parco (2nd Year) and Jadiel Nadine A. Tabuena (1st Year) who garnered 2nd place and 3rd Place to UP-PGH team of Drs. Marie Len A. Camaclang (2nd Year) and Jay-V James G. Barit (1st Year). Coveted new editions of academic references were given by as prizes to all winners as well as for their own institutions.
Truly, everyone who participated went home a winner as the main goal of camaraderie ensued in the spirit of friendly competition. It is also but a challenge for each resident to strive to be well-rounded and rightfully in the know beyond our chosen field. Surely, next year’s competition will be much more looked forward to and exciting, also made especially with hopes of return of the Battle of the Masters.
Congratulations to everyone!
