The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center Inc. (UERMMMCI) Section of Dermatology, in cooperation with the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Subspecialty Core Group of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS), hosted the Continuing Medical Education (CME) entitled “Pedagogia Dermatologia” last September 27, 2017 at the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club.
The afternoon event opened with an industry-sponsored lecture by Dr. Rica Mallari about common pathologic conditions of the hair and the feet. This was followed by a warm welcome from the UERMMMCI Section of Dermatology head, Dr. Camille Angeles, who spoke briefly about the importance of pedagogy and being well-versed regarding sexually transmitted infections as a well-rounded dermatologist.
The main program commenced with a case presentation by the section’s first year resident, Dr. Nicole Laluces, about an 18-year-old man with secondary syphilis who had about 50 sexual partners in the past two years, whom he met mostly through social media. Dr. Winlove Mojica provided an excellent reaction to the case, engaging the audience by speaking of how the rise of social media in the recent years has made finding casual sex partners easier. More importantly, he pointed out that social media may serve as a platform for us dermatologists to reach out to the public and educate them regarding safe sex practices.
The audience was updated on the current statistics of STIs and HIV cases in the Philippines by Ms. Joahnabel delos Santos, a field educator from the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines. Dr. Antonio Sison’s talk entitled “Interplay of psychosocial factors among patients with STIs” emphasized the stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV and STIs and the role of doctors in providing appropriate care to Filipino patients with these conditions. The last lecture for the afternoon was about general principles in STI management coupled with a short but comprehensive summary of the pharmacologic treatment of these infections, delivered by the chair of the STI Subspecialty Core Group, Dr. Gilbert Yang.
The entire program was moderated by Dr. Cathrine Ang. Dr. Angela Lavadia, the PDS president, then wrapped up the productive afternoon with her inspiring closing remarks.
