St. Luke’s Medical Center Department of Dermatology
The St. Luke’s Medical Center Department of Dermatology hosted its Continuing Medical Education in cooperation with the Philippine Dermatological Society Dermatopathology Subspecialty Core Group entitled UPHOLDING THE OATH: Ethics, Value Education, and Discernment last February 28, 2018 at the Henry Sy Auditorium, St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City. The CME focused on a line-up of hot topics related to ethics, focusing on ethical dilemmas commonly encountered in dermatological practice.
The day was formally opened by the moderator Dr. Charlene Ang-Tiu and the event officially started by Dr. Lonabel A. Encarnacion and Dr. Ma. Pilar L. Leuenberger, Chairman of St. Luke’s Medical Center – Quezon City and Global City, respectively.
The rich program started off with a lecture by Dr. Roberto Antonio Pascual entitled The Pharmacy Law in relation to Dermatology Practice in the Philippines which opened with providing the objective side of the Pharmacy Law as well as his insights on its interpretation and practical implementation amongst dermatologists. The lecture sparked a lot of interest amongst the attendees giving rise to a fruitful discussion in light of the recent test-buy operations of clinics conducted by the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Jamie Nunez followed suit and delivered his lecture on the timely topic on The Ethics of Medical Confidentiality in HIV. Dr. Nunez invited a special guest who gave his testimony from a patient’s perspective after he was diagnosed with HIV. The open forum provided the opportunity for attendees to raise their qualms regarding the issue, especially given the steadily increasing incidence of HIV in the Philippines.
Completing the line-up for the Ethics segment, Dr. Lonabel A. Encarnacion delivered her lecture entitled Respecting My Colleague which shed light on the increased importance of effective collaboration amongst not only dermatologists but all healthcare providers.
The last segment of the afternoon was dedicated to an interesting session provided by the Dermatopathology Subspecialty Core Group delivered by Dr. Johannes Dayrit. The lecture focused on the clinicopathological correlation in cutaneous lymphomas.
The day was ended with Dr. Angela T. Medina-Lavadia, the President of the Philippine Dermatological Society, sounding a strong call for sobriety and calm amongst their ranks within the society in light of the recent events related to the Pharmacy Law. Dr. Lavadia closed the session with a powerful call to the society’s members to continue to uphold their oaths and stand firm as the ‘Derm Authority’.
The CME was met with much excitement given the timely topics discussed. The afternoon proved to be a venue for an immensely fruitful exchange of experiences, insights, and perspectives regarding the top ethical challenges in dermatological practice today.
