Isabela host PDS Skin Fair and Life Enhancement Action Program for PDS North Luzon Chapter

by: Dr. Cheryl Blando Arevalo

LEAP 2018. The Skin…the Light…and ME.

The PDS North Luzon Chapter held it’s LEAP, Skin Health Fair and Eczema Congess on April 7, 2018 in Santiago, Isabela. However, members of The PDSNL chapter started their sojourn a day before through the scenic, mountainous and zigzagged roads of the Benguet-Nueva Vizcaya road. Some took the Dalton pass route and others yet, through the panoramic Pagudpud-Patapat route. Which ever way they chose, all had a long and quite arduous land journey.

Activitiy started on midday of April 6, 2018 when the members from Baguio, Pangasinan and Ilocos started arriving. A worshop was scheduled in the afternoon, through the generous support of Creative Skin & Spa, which provided lectures and demonstration of their different lasers (Intragen, Winback to name a few) where, the DermAuthorities were, this time the patients. It must have been quite an experience as all who tried the different lasers were beaming. Our very gracious immediate Past President Dr. Remedios Manuel, not only generously offered the use of her clinic and equipments, but also served sumptuous lunch, merienda, extending to dinner of local delicacies that begged all to forget their diet. As it was also Dr Liberty P. Sumilang’s birthday some days before, she was given a birthday cake and and was sung a birthday song.

Before calling it a night, the chapter had its meeting chaired by our chapter president Dr Liza Marie Paz-Tan.

LEAP started with PDS BOD Dr Arnold Yu welcoming all. He later expounded on several messages from mother PDS, specifically about the TRAIN law, the Pharmacy law, among others which are plaguing the PDS. The first speaker, Irene Gardiner, MD, an OB-Gyne by specialization but is presently the Medical Engagement Manager of Leo Pharm Southeast Asia, spoke about their products but mostly on Daivobet being a mix of Calcipotriol and Betamethasone. She explained how this two cannot mix due to their differences in pH but was bridged by their company to produce an effective once a day topical for Psoriasis enabling better compliance by once daily application.

Dr Lily Lyralin Laconico-Tumalad spoke on the Basics and General Guidelines on Phototherapy. For Psoriasis, narrow band UVB radiation is more effective;  broad band UVB radiation is not much used for Psoriasis now but can be used for Atopic Dermatitis, Vitiligo, to name a few. PUVA or Psoralen + UVA radiation is still an effective treatment for psoriasis.

Rachel Santos, a Marketing Communications Specialist, espoused that if products and services can be branded, then so can we. She enumerated six requisites to a distinct brand. First, one has to market oneself for the long haul, that being, what you stand for. 2nd, be clear. 3rd, be consistent. 4th, be authentic. 5th, be different and lastly, create a buzz about yourself.

By afternoon, we held the Skin Health Fair and Eczema Congress at the Robinson’s Mall. Lectures on Eczema, Photoprotection, and Eczema and the Environment were delivered by Drs Cheryl Arevalo, Remedios Manuel and Maximin Navarro, respectively. Meanwhile, consultations were done simultaneously.

A short symposium on Secukinumab/ Scapho the newest by Novartis was discussed by Dr Liza Marie Paz-Tan, which is an interleukin 17-A inhibitor targeting moderate to severe psoriasis.

And then the fun began with karaoke, Zumba and ballroom dancing. Yet again,  another birthday celebrant, Dr Odette Marion Alonzo was serenaded a birthday song and presented a birthday cake. As the night progressed, loot bags were distrubuted as tokens from the Cagayan Valley denizens.

Of course, we thank Isabela BOD Dr Louella Fatima Bascos for the herculean task of putting this affair, together with Dr Remedios Manuel, Dr Marion Odette Alonzo, and Dr Maximin Navarro. We also thank all who came and attended despite the distance. As always, our gratitude to our partners in the Pharma division for their unfailing support. Thank you.
