DERMAUTHORITIES GO GREEN…PDS KAAGAPAY NG SINING AT KALIKASAN
Penned by the PDS Southern Luzon Chapter Group

From March 16-18, 2018, the PDS Southern Luzon Chapter brought the DERMAUTHORITIES 3,580 feet above sea level, in the summit of Mount Makiling, for the 5th Midyear Convention. Our colleagues and their families were welcomed with a sumptuous dinner at the BP Hotel and a stimulating quiz after Dr. Evelyn Gonzaga’s lecture on “The Role of Topical Treatment for Psoriasis in the Age of Biologics”. The day was capped with everyone pampered with body massages by a special group of deaf and mute masseuses.

Early the following morning, all attendees headed to the Makiling National Arts Theater. The fresh air and natural surroundings generated a relaxed atmosphere, which was the perfect background to reflect on the skin as an important interface between man and the environment. As the diversity and beauty found in nature can both benefit and challenge our skin, we assembled a group of excellent lecturers who are experts in environmental stewardship and in managing skin diseases brought about by the environment. A unique collection of workshops started the first convention day, with the 167 attendees participating in activities focused on enhancing documentation skills and treatment outcomes thru integrating art. Among the workshops were clinical photography using smartphones, dance movement therapy and yoga with poses for stress-related skin conditions. Self-enhancement activities brought together attendees with interests in singing, painting, ballet and zumba.

The lectures started with a presentation by Dr. Nathaniel Bantayan, a forest scientist, on the important role that the forests play in the sustainability of food systems. He emphasized the richness of the Philippine forest and the different ways in which the forest makes the air breathable, ensures water in our homes, protects us from the onslaught of landslides and floods and how it improves our well-being, among many other benefits. Next was an eye-opening lecture  by Dr. Romulo De Villa, a molecular and nutritional oncologist, on keeping the skin healthy through removal of the damaged components of skin cells, by intermittently not eating! This was followed by industry sponsored talks on acne management (Drs Socouer Oblepias and Teresita Gabriel), PIH prevention by the use of sunscreen (Dr. Claudia Samonte) and the relevance of thermal spring water for the skin (Dr. Johannes Dayrit). Ms. Analiza Solis from PAGASA ended the day with a talk on climate change that pointed out an interesting fact that “the eruption of Mt. Mayon did not cause a rise in the environment’s temperature but rather a fall by a few celsius.”

After a solemn anticipated mass that was celebrated in the afternoon, what followed was a spectacular show of talents in the Fellowship Night One with Nature: A Music and Arts Fete Under the Stars”, where the Dermauthorities showcased the skills they acquired or polished through the workshops. Photography bests were Drs. Cristina David-Tan, Arnold Yu and Wilhelmina Maniquis. The Chorale Group sang the timeless Ikaw Lamang Ang Aking IIbiginand the well-loved “PDS Hymn”, leaving everyone in awe. The Ballet Group’s performance was equally astounding! The total art experience was completed with the young, talented scholars of the Philippine High School for the Arts, in an impressive 30-minute show, entitled “Makiling Kolektib “ where they showcased their talents in dancing (ballet, folk dance, jazz), singing, stage acting and playing musical instruments. The night did not end here! Notwithstanding an early start the following day, the unstoppable energy of the DERMAUTHORITIES was unbelievable as they all danced the night away!

The second day started with a wake-up band courtesy of Los Baños Mayor, Honorable Caesar P. Perez. The 25-member drum and bugle corps played Dancing Queen and the theme from Star Wars, among others. Mayor Perez is an environmentalist, who appreciates our willingness to be mindful of the arts and the environment, in practicing our profession. A well-received inspirational message was delivered by Dr. Jose P. Santiago Jr., incoming PMA President, who promised to collaborate with the PDS in promoting skin health through the Dermauthorities. A succession of lectures on environment stewardship, challenges of the environment to our health and treatment updates were presented thereafter: on rehabilitating and maximizing our resources were Ms. Angela Costales from Costales Farms, Dr. Lourdes Cardenas, Dr. Madrina Tamayo-Zafaralla and Engineer Reynaldo Esguerra; on the environment as a challenge to our skin and health, our guest speakers were Drs. Suzette H. Lazo and Rommel Crisenio Lobo; on various management options for different dermatological conditions were Drs. Angela Lavadia, Evangeline Handog and Ma. Deanna Ramiscal ; and on acquainting us with environmental laws, was the lawyer of the house Dr. Elizabeth Amelita V. Tianco.

The 5th PDS Midyear Convention ended with a renewed zest to pursue our profession while making our country a better place for our children. In the words of Dr. Enrique A. Tayag of the DOH, ”despite the many environmental concerns affecting our health, our country still has a chance to improve…we cannot give up!”
