An Interesting and Meaningful World

Dr. Ma. Angela T. Medina-Lavadia, FPDS

It is not uncommon to encounter rocky roads and unpaved paths in life. The PDS has faced such situations at various times in its 65 year journey. These have served as eye openers and even turning points which have directed our collective life in more ways than one.

With the blowing winds of change, we continue to face several legislative maelstroms. Among these are the Pharmacy Act with its iron-hand implementation, the all-encompassing TRAIN Law, and the newly promulgated requirements of the Data Privacy Act—all in the last three months!

The bludgeoning demands of compliance to these regulations present a challenge to many, sometimes requiring a drastic change in clinical approach — and even a paradigm shift in the way we run our affairs and practices. It has once been said that “We don’t grow when things are easy; we grow when we face challenges.” The changes these laws bring signal the need to explore, acquire and master new techniques and procedures and to develop new clinical skills. Here begins  the necessity of adapting fresh strategies for professional growth and development.

The PDS in 2018 offers many opportunities for widening our clinical and professional horizons. Our regular CME covers a broad range of clinical topics and discourses to update us. This year, the Board-initiated LEAP Program gives us the venue to learn more on the ‘Medical and Procedural Management of Acne Scars.’ The ‘Basics of Phototherapy’ series enables us to use this physical modality in our daily practices where we are. Coming soon will be a ‘Biologics Masterclass’ to empower us to confidently prescribe and administer this class of medications. Regular Toxin and Filler enabling workshops are coming up under the auspices of the Dermsurgery team. Continuing Laser Education  (CLE) seminars are regular initiatives of our core group on Laser and Energy-based devices.

Let us maximize these learning opportunities to master new skills and capabilities. As a response to the pressing challenges we face, let us  look forward and achieve new heights of Dermatologic health care delivery for our countrymen.

A respected sage once said, “ Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations”. What can be more beautiful than going around our country  touching the daily lives of our people?  Yes, our activities go on despite the geographical and logistical challenges in these 7,107 islands!  Following the lead of the 1st National Eczema Congress and Fair in July 2017, and The Skin Museum at the Bonifacio Global City in December 2017,  Skin Fairs and Museum installations have been set up in these locations as fun educational and public health outreach events:

PMA Foundation Day- Sept. 25, 2017
Dagupan, Pangasinan – Nov. 30, 2017

Watch out for these and many more coming up soon:

San Fernando, Pampanga – July 22
General Trias, Cavite – August  5
Tacloban City, Leyte – August 11
Ortigas Center, Metro Manila – September

The Dermauthority’s reach extends beyond our shores. In February of this year, we participated in the first ever PDS session at the AAD Global Education Day during the AAD Annual meeting in San Diego, California.  Entitled “Hot Tropical Dermatology”, the session highlighted Dermatology in the Philippines.   This year, the PDS presence at the annual meetings of the Dermatological Society of Thailand (March 2018) and the Dermatologic Society of Singapore- Regional Scientific Meeting of Pediatric Dermatology  (April 2018) was well noted.  In fact, during the upcoming 2nd ILDS Skin Summit (June 2018) in Vietnam, our society has been chosen to present our e-projects and online initiatives to the rest of the Dermatology world!

Truly, there is wisdom in these ancient words:
“Challenges are what makes life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.”

Welcome to the interesting and meaningful world of
PDS the Dermauthority: Equipped to Heal. Empowered to Lead!!
