Dermatoses in Pregnancy: What To Do When There’s A Baby On Board

Pregnancy brings about a multitude of changes in a woman’s body, focal of which is the budding life that she sustains. The Skin and Cancer Foundation, Inc. (SCFI), in collaboration with the Philippine Dermatological Society’s (PDS) Immunodermatology Subspecialty Core Group hosted the Continuing Medical Education (CME) conference centered on this theme with “Dermatoses in Pregnancy: What To Do When There’s A Baby On Board”. The event was held last September 26, 2018 at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.
The conference commenced with an industry-sponsored talk by Dr. Judith Macarayo where she reviewed treatment options for Psoriasis in an aptly titled, “Pagbabalik Tanaw sa Psoriasis-A Step Back in Time”. The CME proper then followed, moderated by Dr. Sharon O. Lim. SCFI chairperson, Dr. Vermèn M. Verallo-Rowell delivered welcoming remarks. Two compelling cases were presented by second year residents of SCFI. The first case, by Dr. Maria Julieta P. Arambulo was on a 24 year old primigravid on her 2nd trimester with severe acne vulgaris. Dr. Noemie S. Ramos gave a discourse on the treatment algorithm, recommendations and precautions when “managing skin bumps in a woman with a bump”. The second case, presented by Dr. Claudine Joy Ramos was on a 24 year old primigravid, at 33 weeks age of gestation, diagnosed with polymorphic eruption of pregnancy. Dr. Marie Eleanore O. Nicolas followed with her extensive discussion on pregnancy specific dermatoses, pathogenesis as well as guidelines of care. Thereafter, Dr. Mae Ramirez-Quizon gave a lecture on the updates on pemphigoid gestationis, with highlights on other dermatoses in pregnancy with similar presentations and current treatment strategies. The last speaker was definitely not the least. An esteemed Mohs surgeon from the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Christine Poblete-Lopez delivered an interactive segment about dermatologic surgery in pregnancy, when safety is of concern and where urgency is necessitated. The event closed with an open forum and a take home message that as dermatologists, the role of reassuring pregnant patients of their conditions and managing expectations with proper advice is incumbent.
