Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center

The Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center Department of Dermatology held its Postgraduate Course entitled, “K-Pop Derm: Optimizing Present Practices in the Art of Dermatology” last September 27, 2018 at the Century Park Hotel, Malate, Manila. This event focused on the latest trends of Korean and Asian Aesthetic Dermatology that are applicable to Philippine Dermatologic practice.

The postgraduate course was formally opened by Dr. Eileen Regalado-Morales, the Department Training Officer, who led the Invocation, and by Dr. Benedicto Carpio, the Department Chairman, who welcomed 160 participants to the event.

The morning lecture sessions focused on Wellness in Dermatology, with lectures delving on the novel insights on Korean and Asian holistic skin care. Kristine Lucas, renowned cosmetologist, described the application of permanent makeup in common pigmentary conditions, Dr. Cecilia Molina talked about the science behind the Ketogenic diet, and Patricia Marie Estacio, clinical nutritionist, explained the benefits of healthy diet and nutrition for the skin. These were followed thereafter by a discussion of Korean diet sprays by Adrian Jongchan Kim, a lecture of the complications of dermal fillers by Dr. Maria Jennina Francisco-Diaz, and an exploration by Dr. Frances Vera Bernardino of the traditional Chinese practice of acupuncture and its application to dermatological conditions. The morning sessions were moderated by Dr. Joyce Dancel and Dr Bernadette Lou Caluya, both alumna of the department.

During the lunch symposium, Dr. Lucia Lourdes Castro-Fores gave a lecture about retinol peels for Acne, while Dr. Emmerson Gale Vista discussed about biologic medications for the Asian Skin.

The afternoon lecture sessions focused on Korean Aesthetic Dermatology, with Dr. Jema Fe Fajardo-Bautista and Dr. Joyce Dancel moderating the course. Sunhee Hwang began the afternoon session with a lecture on Korean cosmeceuticals. This was followed by a detailed discussion of facial contouring and anatomy by Dr. Henry John Claravall, and a lecture with live demo of Korean threadlifting by Dr. Enerizza Cacha-Genilo. Dr. Sandy Chris Tan compared the results of Korean modalities and machines via-a-vis Western ones, while Dr. Kang Jae-goo discussed adult stem cell anti-aging treatment. Last, but not the least, Dr. Mabelle Fernandez-Colayco capped the postgraduate course with a discussion of Korean facials and the science of microblading. The event ended with a closing remark from Dr. Armelia Lapitan-Torres, chair of the postgraduate course.

The increasing popularity of Korean and Asian beauty products and technological sophistication of our patients mandates us to actively update ourselves with regard to the latest trends in Asian aesthetics. Thus, we hope that our attendees will pursue further knowledge of Korean and Asian dermatology with the intended goal of providing excellent and holistic patient care that are based on Optimized, Present Practices in the Art of Dermatology.
