February 21, 2019 may have been a week from Valentine’s Day, but still the love for our brethren at the Jose N. Rodriguez Medical Center, formerly known as Tala Leprosarium, still flowed out when

the Philippine Dermatological Society conducted their annual gift-giving activity. A project conceived by Dr. Ma. Teresita G. Gabriel, this has continued up to the present. This outreach program is on its 11th year. This is participated by the members of the Leprosy Subspecialty Core Group, consultants and residents from various accredited institutions with full support from the Board of Directors.

PDS President Dr. Ma. Purita Paz-Lao, Head of the Leprosy Subspecialty Core Group, Dr. Ma. Teresita G. Gabriel, Dr. Nelizza Beatriz Viray-Jiao (Head , PDS Outreach Committee) along with PDS Officers, Board of Directors, Immediate Past President, Dr. Ma. Angela Lavadia, consultants and residents from the different dermatology institutions. From slippers, to towels, to toothbrushes, to t-shirts but these past three years have been mainly fruits.  It was symbolic that the PDS give them something to nourish their bodies, something fresh, something to supplement what they sorely lacked.

There were 4 infirmary wards that catered to 59 enrolled patients whom the group visited to show their compassion for our less fortunate brothers. The patients at the ward showcased their livelihood which is floor rag making which the PDS eagerly supported. This was followed by a tour of the Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital, including the hospital’s Department of Dermatology, conducted by the department’s staff Chair, Dr. Frederica Veronica Marquez-Protacio.

The current number of patients, 59, is much lower than the 70s that we were accustomed to. This is reflective of the goals of leprosy elimination being reached. We are happy to see a lot of improvement in the medical center and much more happy to note that our PDS colleagues are at the helm of dermatology training here.

There was also a demonstration of how to perform Slit Skin Smear by the hospital’s medical technologists.
