The Philippine Dermatological Society successfully conducted the 2nd Asian Eczema Master Class through an educational grant from Dylan Philippines. This was sealed through a memorandum of agreement signed by PDS President Dr. Ma. Purita Paz-Lao in behalf of the society.
The Philippine Dermatological Society remains to be steadfast in its goal in pursuing excellence in skin. Year after year, the society has actively participated in activities that will ensure this pursuit. True to this claim, the society has recently hosted the 2nd Asian Eczema Master Class held last February 15-16, 2019 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Bonifacio Hall, The Fort BGC at Taguig City.
The two-day event was well attended by dermatologist, allergologist, pediatricians and primary health care physicians hailing from nearby Asian countries and various regions in the Philippines. Spearheading the scientific program was the chair of the society, Dr. Ma. Purita G. Paz-Lao, FPDS together with the honorary chairs: Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia, FPDS, Dr. Ma. Teresita G. Gabriel, FPDS, Dr. Maria Victoria C. Dizon, FPDS and special guest, Prof. Thomas A. Luger from Germany.
Included in the panel are speakers from the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand and Germany, all of whom are experts in the field of Atopic Dermatitis (AD). To highlight this event were the lectures given by Prof. Thomas A. Luger, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Munster in Germany, in which he discussed the diverse microbiome in atopic dermatitis which gave insights on its role in the pathogenesis and therapy. He also gave an overview of the new Asian AD algorithm emphasizing new approaches to management.
The two-day program started with session 1 which focused on the background and pathogenesis of AD. This session included speakers from the Philippines, Dr. Cindy Jao-Tan, FPDS and Dr. Marie Eleanore O. Nicolas, FPDS, who gave comprehensive lectures on AD and the Impact of Quality of Life and, the Immunopathogenesis of AD, respectively. Session 2 of the program centered on the diagnosis and epidemiology of AD in which the following speakers shared their expertise on their respective topics. Dr. Tay Yong Kwang (Singapore) on the Epidemiology and Racial/Ethnic Differences; Dr. Leong Kin Fon (Malaysia) on the Multiple Facets of AD in Asian Population; Dr. Ma. Teresita G. Gabriel, FPDS (Philippines) on the Challenges in AD. A networking dinner culminated the first day of the event where in guests were serenaded by children of the Valenzuela orchestra. This was a perfect way to end the first day wherein participants from across Asia were able to mingle and get acquainted.
Day two of the event included session 3 and 4 of the program which focused on the management of AD. These sessions emphasized on the different therapy, guidelines and recommendations for AD. Dr. Rommel Crisenio M. Lobo, FPSAAI (Philippines) gave a lecture on AD inducers which was followed by Dr. Siriwan Wananukul of Thailand and Dr, Chia-Yu Chu, Ph.D. of Taiwan who gave an overview on the management strategies in AD and guidelines and recommendations in AD, respectively. A special lecture on pediatric AD was given by Dr. Gisella E. Umali-Adasa, FPDS (Philippines) which was followed on a lecture on chronic pruritus given by Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia, FPDS (Philippines). The last session of the event included relevant topics for AD. Food Allergy in AD was given by Dr. Marysia Stella T. Recto, FPSAAI (Philippines); Old Beliefs and Cultural Disasters that Worsen AD given by Dr. Maria Victoria C. Dizon, FPDS (Philippines); Local Tradition and Cultural Myths in AD given by Dr. Ellis Kam Lun Hon (Hong Kong); How to Debunk Misconceptions of AD given by Dr. Leong Kin Fon (Malaysia); The Psychological Burden of Living with AD given by Dr. Ma. Purita G. Paz-Lao, FPDS (Philippines).
Truly, the 2nd Asian Eczema Master Class has strengthen the claim of PDS to be the dermAuthority. Also, this has provided a venue for exchange of knowledge in AD across Asian countries as well as an avenue for the society to showcase our expertise in the art and science of dermatology.
