Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble: The Conundrum of Blistering Diseases
By Dr. Sarah E. Nain and Dr. Riza I. Sarne

The Department of Dermatology at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), in cooperation with Immunobullous Dermatology Subspecialty Core Group of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS), hosted the Continuing Medical Education (CME) entitled “Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble: The Conundrum of Blistering Diseases” last June 26, 2019 held at the RITM Auditorium, Alabang, Muntinlupa. This month’s CME accommodated a group of 55 participants, made up of residents and consultants, mostly from the Southern Luzon area. Likewise, PDS members and residents from the different accredited institutions nationwide were able to view the conference.  This was made possible by the live online streaming provided by our sponsor, GlaxoSmithKline-Philippines. A total of 252 viewers were able to participate online through the live webcast coverage. Dr. Maria Teresita G. Gabriel, Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the RITM, formally opened the CME with the welcoming remarks. Dr. Johannes F. Dayrit, head of the Dermatopathology Unit of RITM, served as moderator for the entire program.

The main program commenced with a case presentation on Bullous Pemphigoid by Dr. Maria Jenina P. Aguado, a second year dermatology resident in this institution.  This was followed by a lecture on Bullous Pemphigoid by Dr. Clarisse G. Mendoza, Immunodermatology head of RITM and a member of the PDS Immunobullous Subspecialty Core Group. Dr. Mendoza lectured on the clinical presentations, as well as the various treatment options available for the said disease.

The second case was on Chronic Bullous Disease of Childhood was presented by Dr. Juan Antonio D. Cervantes, also a second year dermatology resident at RITM. Dr. Gisella U. Adasa, Pediatric Dermatology unit head of RITM and a member of the PDS Pediatric Subspecialty Core Group, was the reactor for this case. Dr. Adasa gave a comprehensive discussion on Chronic Bullous Disease of Childhood, as well as other blistering diseases amongst this population. She identified possible mimickers of the disease, and the special considerations in the treatment of pediatric patients.

Dr. Katrina Canlas Estrella, a member of the PDS Immunobullous Subspecialty Core Group, gave a lecture on the use of immunosuppressives in special populations. She discussed different blistering diseases among geriatric, pregnant patients, and as well as management amongst this population.

This was followed by a very informative lecture on relevant and frequently encountered issues when starting and maintaining a private practice. This lecture was given by Ms. Eugene R. Garcia, BIR Group Supervisor. She provided the audience with information on how to properly file income taxes and comply with mandatory government requirements in private practice.

Dr. Ma. Purita Paz-Lao, the PDS president, wrapped up the productive afternoon with her inspiring closing remarks. Overall, it was an afternoon full of valuable and relevant learning for all dermatologists. As complicated as the conundrum of blistering diseases maybe, it is always possible to shed light on these troublesome diseases with continued pursuit of learning.
