The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, Inc.  (UERMMMCI) Section of Dermatology’s webcast continuing medical education (CME) entitled “TOUCH ME NOT!” had three segments – first was a series of lectures by the Photodermatology core group members; second was composed of a case presentation and updates regarding the subspecialty by the UERMMMCI Section of Dermatology and Contact Dermatitis core group; and third was a talk on medical professionalism by Dr. Malaya Santos. Indeed, dermatology is a multifaceted specialty.  The Photodermatology lecture speakers discussed the role of the exposome or the environment in skin aging and skin disorders, the different types and devices used for phototherapy, and the clinical utility of this modality in the management of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, and mycosis fungoides.

There is a multitude of allergens around us.  In order to keep their fellow dermatologists vigilant, the Contact Dermatitis and Environmental Dermatology Group has actively held meetings and patch test workshops this year, and their lectures has kept everyone informed with regards the incidence of patch test-proven allergenic preservatives among Filipinos.  The Allergen of the Year was revealed during this CME activity – isobornyl acrylate, which is responsible for rising cases of contact allergy to glucose sensors. This was followed by a presentation of a case of allergic contact dermatitis secondary to henna tattoo.  Take caution as this could potentially have a complication, i.e. systemic contact dermatitis, from cross-reactions to sulfa drugs, celecoxib, thiazides, and artificial sweeteners. Truly, dermatology requires mastery of a vast and continuously evolving knowledge on skin, hair, and nail disorders, but at the end of the day, we should always remember that what we do is part of our calling in this profession to dedicate one’s life to being of service to mankind, as stressed by Dr. Malaya Santos, during her wonderful, enlightening talk on medical professionalism.
