The Philippine Dermatological Society started the year with their 19th Dermatological Surgery Mission at the Good News Clinic and Hospital in Banaue, Ifugao on January 3-5, 2020.
This annual event is headed by New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center dermatologist Dr. Ida Tiongco with Dr. Antonio Ligot, the director of Good News Clinic and Hospital in Banaue. Now on its 19th year, this annual mission is held at the Good News Clinic and Hospital by the Philippine Dermatological Society in cooperation with the American Academy of Dermatology.
Joining in the mission this year were PDS President, Dr. Peachy Paz-Lao, Vice-President, Dr. Francisco Rivera IV, past president Dr. Ma. Teresita Gabriel, and PDS Board member Dr. Jasmin Jamora, along with consultants and residents from different training institutions such as Makati Medical Center, Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, Jose R Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center, University of Santo Tomas, Skin and Cancer Foundation, and Southern Philippines Medical Center. Three visiting dermatologists from Hungary have also attended the mission.
This event not only provided much needed dermatological surgery care to the people of Banaue, but also served as additional training in the field of dermatological surgery for residents. Dr. Ida Tiongco, Dr. Arcee Grey, Dr. Angel Cumagun, Dr. Karen Alabado, Dr. Veronica Uy, and Dr. Odette Alonzo were the mentors. Among the procedures done were excisions, electrocautery, intralesional steroid injections, and biopsies. A total of 508 patients were seen and 133 surgeries were done in the three days the mission was held.
